UN food body to shift aid emphasis

The World Food Programme is to announce a new timetable next month to phase out emergency food aid to East Timor. The head of the UN agency, Catherine Bertini, says the UN will move from food aid to targeting school children and crop production.

[Bertini] No-one wants the East Timorese to be dependent on food aid, least of all the East Timorese. So what will be critical is for us to have a phase-out of that programme in a manner that people are supported, but only when they absolutely need the food. And we will be looking in consultation with others working in the area, and certainly with CNRT [National Council of Timorese Resistance], about what will be the needs for the future and how we will target those most in need...
