Kupang: The NTT [East Nusa Tenggara] provincial government has
forbidden the Timorese People's Party (PPT) from engaging in practical
politics - for example, holding meetings - on NTT territory. "I have
informed PPT leader Herminio da Silva da Costa not to hold political
meetings in NTT," NTT Deputy Governor Johanis Pake Pani told
reporters in Kupang yesterday [24th May]. Pani asked the leader [da Costa]
of the party that would become a participant in the first general
elections in East Timor at the beginning of 2001 to coordinate with the UN
agency involved with refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Transitional
Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). "I also asked [da Costa] to
confine his political activities to East Timor, not NTT," he said.
The PPT [a pro-integrationist party] was declared in Kupang on 7th May.

Kupang—UNTAS figure Joanico Cesario responds to recent statements by
Hermenio da Silva da Costa, saying that he is only trying to promote his
own career after failing to obtain a leadership position within UNTAS. He
also questioned Hermenio’s claim to be former "chief of staff"
of PPI, saying no had ever elevated him to that position. Cesario also
questioned the presence of Untaet spokesman Colin Stewart in NTT, saying
that Untaet had no business here, and suggesting that Stewart may simply
be a spy.
