Udayana chief urges East Timorese to abandon violent approach
JAKARTA (JP): Chief of the Udayana Military Command Maj. Gen. Kiki
Syahnakri urges East Timorese refugees living in East Nusa Tenggara to
return home and take part in the 2001 general elections.
"East Timor is undergoing a democratization process to brace
itself for the 2001 elections that will allow the participation of
prointegrationists," Kiki said in Atambua Wednesday.
Kiki was in Atambua, Belu regency, to deliver corn and rice seeds to
refugees on behalf of the Indonesian Military (TNI) chief Admiral Widodo
AS, Antara reported.
Kiki warned the refugees that if they failed to grasp the opportunity,
the loss would be theirs. He therefore urged every East Timorese refugee
to use their common sense and take part in the democratization process.
"The time has come to abandon the use of violence because whoever
violates human rights will be the sure loser," he added.
"I want all refugees to realize that they can no longer use
violence to achieve our goals. And anyone who violates human rights in
fighting for their goals will suffer a complete defeat," he said.
