East Timor: Portuguese Aid Teachers with Eye Exams, Treatment 17 Oct-13:54

Preparing for the relaunching of East Timor's school system, the Portuguese aid mission will begin territory-wide eye examinations for teachers, more than half of whom are believed to suffer from deficient vision.

At an initial cost of euros 32,500, the program, slated to begin next week, will include checkups for the 7,500 Timorese teachers, the offer of glasses and surgery, officials in Dili told Lusa Tuesday.

The spokesman for the Portuguese aid mission, Antonio Peres Metello, said that, if needed, additional funds would be allocated for the program.
