East Timor: Three-Continent Trip Takes Gusmao to Portugal 24 Oct-13:01 East Timorese independence leader Xanana Gusmao departed Dili Tuesday on a three-continent trip that will take him to Cape Verde, Portugal and South Korea. After bolstering traditionally strong ties with leaders of Cape Verde, like East Timor a former Portuguese island territory, Gusmao was scheduled to arrive in Lisbon Saturday. During his five-day visit to Portugal, he will meet with President Jorge Sampaio and Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, among others, and receive an honorary doctorate from the northern University of Oporto. On Nov. 2, Gusmao will fly to South Korea where he will be honored with the prestigious Kwangju Prize, before returning to Dili Nov. 4. October
