EAST TIMOR
In October 2000, UNIFEM joined forces with Australian women to support
and empower women of East Timor during the country's transition from
Indonesian rule to independence. This joint-project will provide training
and counseling services for women who have survived violence resulting
from political conflict.
UNIFEM is also supporting the efforts of East Timorese women working to
ensure equal representation of women and men in the first general election
scheduled for August 2001. UNIFEM will provide support to enhance women's
leadership skills and facilitate a more open environment for women to
participate in the public realm of governance at the local and national
level.
