East Timor: US Congress Approves Dlrs 25 Million in Aid for Territory 26 Oct-20:00

The United States Congress has approved an aid package of dlrs 25 million to support the transition to independence in East Timor.

The amount is included in the 2001 budget for foreign operations appropriations, which was approved Wednesday by both chambers of the Congress and now awaits the signature of the US president.

The legislation also maintains current restrictions on military aid to Indonesia until that country's government and armed forces fully cooperate with efforts to judge those deemed responsible for human rights violations in Indonesia and East Timor.

Support for Indonesia also remains dependent on the repatriation of East Timorese refugees and measures to prevent incursions into East Timor by anti-independence militias.
