East Timor: Portuguese Teachers, School Books on Their Way 21
Sept-12:15
The first of four groups of Portuguese-language teachers departs
Portugal for East Timor Thursday, in time to help launch the Asian
Territory's first school year following its 1999 independence plebiscite
from Indonesia.
Education Minister Augusto Santos Silva was to see off the 48- strong
group of teachers from Lisbon airport. Three more groups were scheduled to
head for Dili over the weekend.
The East Timorese leadership has opted for Portuguese, the language of
its former colonial ruler, as an official language.
Lisbon has made education, particularly the teaching of Portuguese, one
of its aid priorities in its program to help rebuild the territory.
In recent days Portugal sent 183,000 school books and 4,000 Tetum-Portuguese
dictionaries and grammars, along with other teaching material, for the
opening of East Timor's school year on Oct. 2.
