The regional administrator of East Timor's second city said armed gangs were spreading violence through the city on Saturday.

Mario Reis told Portuguese TV "According to information I was able to gather, they are now moving to sub-districts so that they may launch a new cycle and fresh provocation".

This followed their destruction of a mosque in the city after violence spread from Viqueque, the easternmost point of the territory.

The overall UN Administrator for East Timor, Sergio Vieira de Mello, said the mosque would be rebuilt.

Timorese independence leader Xanana Gusmao condemned the violence and asked the international community not to be dissuaded from investing in the territory.

Groups of rampaging youths in East Timor set fire to and destroyed a mosque in the city of Baucau and terrified the city's population, Portuguese TV reported on Saturday.

"It is clear that there are still groups capable of such cowardly and shameful attacks," UN Administrator Sergio Vieira de Mello said after visiting the ruins of the mosque, in remarks broadcast by the TV.

"It has not been possible to root them out in a matter of months."

"We believe that these people are inspired and manipulated by political forces interested in continuing to foster anarchy, chaos and insecurity in this country," he added, "but we also know that they are a small minority."

The TV showed the burnt-out shell of the mosque with burnt pages of the Koran scattered inside. It said none of the attackers had been identified.
