25 Jun 01 19:31 Portugal: Sampaio in New York, Discusses East Timor with Powell

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, who is in New York to attend the UN conference on AIDS, met Monday with US Secretary of State Colin Powell to discuss the future of East Timor.

Sampaio said the 15-minute encounter had served to clarify Portugal's position on East Timor. He emphasized that the territory needed UN accompaniment even after independence, which is expected within the next year.

Such support should be at both the administrative and security levels, Sampaio said. Powell's comments on the subject were "very positive", he added.

Queried Sunday by CNN on Portugal's future role in East Timor, Sampaio had said that no specific role was intended, only continuation of the successful process under way in the territory.

East Timor is the "only success case" under UN supervision, he stated, adding that the scheduling of Aug. 30 constituent assembly elections in the territory marked accomplishment of a "major task".

In his comments to CNN, the Portuguese president also recalled the international community's commitment to fulfilling the "magic promise" of independence for East Timor.

The territory, which had been occupied by Indonesia for 24 years, voted for independence in 1999 and is currently governed by a UN administration mandated to oversee the transition to independence.
