East Timor´s leaders joined the president of Portugal´s national Lusa News Agency, Manuel Pedroso Marques, Wednesday in inaugurating the agency´s new installations in Dili.
UN administrator Sergio Vieria de Mello and Chief Minister Mari Alkatiri were among scores of officials attending the inauguration of the two-building complex.
Widely considered the prime source of news on East Timor, Lusa has maintained a permanent presence in the territory since 1999, distributing more than 10,000 dispatches on the transition to independence from Indonesian rule.
Lusa´s coverage of East Timorese developments has become a pivotal source of news for Timorese media, Dili-based diplomats and non-governmental organizations working in the territory.
The agency´s service is provided free of charge to two local daily newspapers and its dispatches are widely used in Portuguese language classes across the country.
