Subject: Sunrise gas: the confusion continues

Thursday, 5 December, 2002

Darwin, 5 December, OGT-The Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin has said Phillips Petroleum is still optimistic about Greater Sunrise gas coming onshore.

The ABC has reported that there is confusion over whether all the joint venture partners behind bringing Greater Sunrise gas onshore to Darwin think the project is unviable. Martin said letters to potential customers of the gasfield stating that bringing gas onshore was not viable did not come from all companies involved in the project and that they continued to disagree about the venture, the ABC reported.

However, Woodside's Nigel Grazia says all companies involved approved the letter after a meeting last week. Meanwhile, a former Labor senator has said there is an opportunity for the Federal Government to make a financial contribution to bringing Greater Sunrise gas onshore as it did with the Alice Springs to Darwin railway.

Bob Collins is also a member of Team NT, the group promoting Timor Sea gas development.
