Timor Leste Becomes the 191st UN Member

East Timor today became the 191st member of the United Nations. The new country has been admitted by the General Assembly as the Republic of Timor Leste. Delegates applauded as the country's first president led his delegation to assume the seat of Timor Leste in the General Assembly. The President of the Assembly, Ambassador Jan Kavan, welcomed the new Member State:

"Timor Leste has been the first independent state and nation that emerged in the 21st century. It was not an easy way, but the country and its people succeeded. I am very proud and happy that the United Nations was an integral part of this whole process."

Timor Leste became fully independent from Indonesia in May this year. Indonesia invaded the former Portuguese colony in 1976.
