Australia's new ambassador in East Timor is a career diplomat, Margaret Twomey. She is expected to take up the Dili post in July, replacing Paul Foley.

Announcing Ms Twomey's appointment, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says Australia remains in the forefront of international support to East Timor.

While not referring to the differences between Canberra and Dili over seabed boundaries, Mr Downer says Australia will continue as a strong advocate for the new nation.

Mr Downer says Australia is encouraging the United Nations Security Council to agree to another UN mission in East Timor when the current mandate expires in May.

He says a new mission with a security focus is needed to guard stability and the important gains made in building East Timor as a nation.
