RI considering joint security post at border with East Timor

Kupang (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is studying the possibility of setting up a joint border security post at Mota`ain at the border with East Timor like the one in Entikong at the border with Malaysia to improve coordination and supervision of border services.

"The joint security post is solely intended for promoting coordination and supervision of services at the border between Indonesia and Timor Leste," the chief of the 161/Wirasakti resort military command, Col APJ Noch Bola, said here on Wednesday.

He said a team from the ministry of defense was currently studying the plan which was expected to be able to be materialized this fiscal year.

Bola said the post would help serve border crossers from and to East Timor like in Entikong at the border with Malaysia.

The chief of the defense forces (TNI), Marshal Djoko Suyanto, told ANTARA News on last Monday that the TNI planned to add 115 more security posts at the border with Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor.

He said the number of present border security posts was still inadequate compared to the vast border regions needing security.

Bola said the border security posts would be built in stages on the border between the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara and East Timor as well as on other remotest islands in the province.

"Many of our border posts are not proper as their walls are still made from forest palms. It is time to construct better buildings to replace them," he said. (*)
