Portugal signs 2007-2010 cooperation program with East Timor [ 2007-09-03 ]

Dili, East Timor, 3 Sept ­ The governments of Portugal and East Timor Friday signed the Indicative Cooperation Program (PIC) for the next four years, estimated at a total of 60 million euros.

The PIC was signed at the Government Palace by João Gomes Cravinho, Portugal’s secretary of state for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and by Zacarias da Costa, East Timor’s foreign minister.

The 2007-2010 PIC will carry out the objectives of the document entitled, “Strategic Vision for Portuguese Cooperation,” and the development targets identified by the Timorese government and defines the cooperation strategy between both countries.

The first area, Good Governance, Participation and Democracy, has funding of 12.5 million euros and includes cooperation in the justice sector.

Sustainable development and Combating poverty, is the second area of action, with funding of 46 million euros, including the education sector and reintroduction of the Portuguese language.

The PIC also sets out funding of 1.5 million euros for a program to encourage sustainable development, in an area as yet to be defined.

Between 1999 and 2006, Portugal’s aid to East Timor totaled over 381 million euros, and the previous PIC, for the 2004-2006 period totaled 50 million euros. (macauhub)
