New chief of army staff takes over in Indonesia

Jakarta: The post of the Army chief of staff was handed over on Monday [31 December] from Gen Djoko Santoso to Lt-Gen Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo.

The handing over ceremony of the Army chief of staff post was led by outgoing Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) Commander Marshal Djoko Suyanto at the Army Headquarters here.

Lt-Gen Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo graduated from the Military Academy in 1974 and began his military career as a platoon commander of the Air Force's Airborne 305/17/I/K Infantry Battalion, chief of the Central Aceh District Military Command, assistant to the deputy for operations to the Bukit Barisan Regional Deputy Commander, deputy commander of the Trikora Regional Command, commander of Division II of Kostrad and Pattimura Regional Command chief.

Born in Surabaya, East Java, in August 1952, he joined various military operations in East Timor from 1975 to 1983, military operations in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (1991-1994) and "Operation Nuri" in Irian Jaya 2001.

In his address, Marshal Djoko Suyanto called on the Army leaders to carry out their main tasks seriously and play their roles and functions together with other nation's components.

"The Army must be able to keep its commitment in carrying out its main tasks, roles and functions and help settle various problems faced by the nations together with other national components," he said.

Gen Djoko Santoso, meanwhile, has been named new commander of TNI to succeed Marshal Djoko Suyanto.

Djoko Santoso graduated from the Military Academy in 1975. He spent most of his past career in the Army's intelligence service. He began assuming leading positions in the army when he was appointed chief of the Pattimura Regional Military Command concurrently commander of Security Restoration Operations in Maluku province in 2002-2003.

Born in Solo, Central Java, on 8 September, 1952, key military positions Santoso once held included assistant to the TNI's Territorial Staff Chief's deputy for social and political affairs in 1998, deputy chief of the Diponegoro Regional Military Command in 2000 and commander of Division II of the Army's Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) a year later.
