Dili: About 690 Manufahi residents who fled to Dili after being terrorized and intimidated by certain groups from January 1999, returned to their homes on Tuesday (27th July). They will be registering to participate in the August ballot when they return home.

One of the workers responsible for helping the refugees return home, Tobias Amaral Magno, made these comments at the University of East Timor campus on Tuesday (27th July).

Ninety-three of the 690 refugees have already registered in Dili. The remaining 597 are from four sub-districts, Same (253 people), Alas (78), Turiscai (333) and Fatuberliho (28)...

Tobias explained that on their arrival in Manufahi, the refugees would report to the local UNAMET [UN Mission in East Timor] registration office and consider the [security] situation in the district. If possible, they would return to their villages, however if the situation were not secure, they would remain and register in Same. "If conditions are still uncertain, we will return to Dili any way we can," said Tobias...
