WAHID DOES NOT OBJECT TO CNRT OFFICE IN JAKARTA

MANILA, Nov 29

President Abdurrahman Wahid said he has no objection to the National Council for East Timorese Resistance (CNRT) opening a representative office in Jakarta in the near future.

"We have to forget whatever mistakes both sides have made in the past in order to develop our future," the president told a press conference in Manila on Sunday night.

The press conference, which followed CNRT President Xanana Gusmao's arrival in Jakarta on Saturday night drew much attention from many foreign journalists covering the 3rd ASEAN Informal Summit.

Meanwhile, Xanana Gusmao is slated to meet Wahid in Jakarta on November 30 before leaving for Beijing to make his first state visit.

Wahid admitted some circles have objected to the CNRT's plan to open a representative office in Jakarta.

"I asked them whether they believed that Xanana would become the president of Timor Leste (East Timor) . If yes, why don't they give it (CNRT) a chance to open a representative office in Jakarta," he said.
