Kuala Lumpur, 19 February: Strife-torn East Timor has asked Malaysia to help train its police force and provide educational aid, including more university places, for East Timorese as the country embarks on reconstruction.

Visiting cleric and Nobel Prize laureate Bishop Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo conveyed this request on behalf of East Timorese leader Xanana Gusmao when he called on Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar at Wisma Putra here Monday [19 February].

Syed Hamid told reporters later: "As we are an open and friendly nation we believe our experience as a developing country can be applied in other countries as well.. we are prepared to provide assistance and exchange experience."

Belo arrived here on Friday for a four-day visit at the invitation of the Catholic Lawyer's Society of Kuala Lumpur.

Syed Hamid said Malaysia had in the past trained East Timorese in administration and diplomacy.
