ETimor president extends top judge's mandate

DILI, June 12 2007

East Timor's President Jose Ramos-Horta on Tuesday extended the mandate of the tiny nation's top judge by another four years ahead of parliamentary elections later this month.

Claudio Ximenes will head East Timor's Court of Appeal for another four years as the former Indonesian and Portuguese colony struggles to build the capacity of its judicial institutions.

"In four years (Ximenes) has shown independence and as president, as a Timorese, I am proud of his competence and therefore I appoint him as head" for another four-year term, Ramos-Horta told a press conference here.

The Court of Appeal is one of East Timor's four main independent state institutions, along with the presidency, government and parliament.

Voters in East Timor, one of the world's poorest nations, will head to the polls on June 30.
