09 JUN 98 - 09:52 East Timor: Prisoners in Dili meet head of Indonesia's National Commission for Human Rights
Dili, 09 Jun (Lusa) - A delegation of prisoners of the Becora prison in Dili met on Sunday the head [sic] of Indonesia's National Commission for Human Rights, the Timorese Clementino dos Reis Amaral, Indonesian state news agency Antara reported on Monday. The director of the prison Fransiskus Subani said that the prisoners asked Amaral to arrange a meeting with Justice Minister Muladi to discuss the possible release of the Timorese political prisoners. The report said also that the prisoners intended also to discuss the recent food poisoning in the prison. Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975 and annexed it one year later but the UN still regards Portugal as the territory's administering power. Portugal has supported the East Timorese resistance's claim for a referendum to decide over the future of the territory.-Lusa nnnn
