Ambassador
Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 15:04:45 -0700 (PDT)
From: tapol@gn.apc.org (Tapol) This is
outrageous! -- Hashim Djojohadikusumo named by Habibie as Ambassador- At-Large to promote
Indonesia's business interests internationally. Hashim heads a number of of bankrupt banks
placed under govt. control -- plus various monopolies/cartels he obtained thru partnership
with his sister-in-law Titiek Suharto and collusion with his brother Gen. Prabowo, whose
nefarious operations Hashim bankrolled. Hashim's flag ship company, Cement Cibinong, is on
the verge of bankruptcy. One of his trading companies, Comexindo, was granted a virtual
monopoly on counter trade by the Suharto govt. Hashim has admitted to members of his inner
circle that he was a key source of funding of Prabowo's counter-insurgency operations in
East Timor and North Sumatra. One of Prabowo's operations involved formation of the
dreaded 'Black Ninja' death squads responsible for thousands abductions, torture victims,
and killings.

Habibie approves 7 ambassadors-at-large
Tirtamas Group chief will update govts in Europe
INDONESIA's President B J Habibie has approved seven ambassadors-at-large proposed by
the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), said the association's chairman,
Aburizal Bakrie.
Kadin has sent representatives abroad in the past to ask foreign creditors to roll over
Indonesian loans.
Indonesian companies owe US$78.2 billion (S$133.7 billion) in debt to foreign creditors
following the plunge in the rupiah and an economic slowdown.
Hashim Djojohadikusumo will go to Europe, where he will argue the case of the
Indonesian government, and keep foreign governments abreast of the developing political
and economic situation in Indonesia. Mr Hashim heads the Tirtamas Group, which controls a
bank, trading companies and PT Semen Cibinong, one of the country's three largest cement
makers.
James Riady, deputy director of the Lippo Group, will cover Hongkong and Thailand,
while Baramuli will go to Japan and South Korea. Kadin assigned Surja Sulistio to the US,
Iman Taufik to the Asean countries, and Muchrim Hakim to Africa. M Sinivasan, president
director of PT Polysindo Eka Perkasa, will take on India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Mr Bakrie also said that Kadin, which groups mostly ethnic Malay Indonesians, will
accept members of Prasetja Mulja, whose members are ethnic Chinese businessmen such as
Liem Sioe Liong, Eka Tjipta Widjaja, and Prajogo Pangestu.
He did not say whether Prasetja Mulja would disband. -- Bloomberg
