The East Timor Human Rights Centre (ETHRC) has received confirmation that Januario
Freitas, who was arrested on or about 11 July 1998 and arbitrarily detained at POLRES
(Police Resort) in Dili, has been released. ETHRC sources have confirmed that Januario
Freitas was arbitrarily detained at POLRES for approximately one month.
Freitas was also subjected to torture by members of the Indonesian military. Prior to
his detention at POLRES, he was taken to the Wirahusada military hospital in Dili for
treatment for injuries sustained as a result of the torture.
