NAMES: Marcos Belo, 28
VIOLATIONS: Arbitrary Detention, Torture
LOCATION: Baucau, East Timor
Ref: UA 14/98PR
The East Timor Human Rights Centre (ETHRC) has received further information in relation
to Marcos Belo, who was arrested on 30 September, 1998. Belo was arrested with three other
East Timorese youths, Agapito Belo, Carlos Pinto Belo and Ernesto Amaral Belo, during a
military operation in Kaisida hamlet, Baucau. During the operation, the military forces
attacked seven houses in the hamlet, arresting the four East Timorese men and confiscating
personal property (see UA 14/98 for details). The ETHRC previously reported that the other
three detainees were released after short-term detention.
ETHRC sources have now confirmed that Marcos Belo has also been released and that the
personal property which was confiscated during the military operation will be returned to
the rightful owners through church mediators located in Baucau.
NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED IN RELATION TO THIS CASE Thank-you to all those who
