Carrascalão made the announcement in Villamoura on Wednesday, saying he had received the information by telephone from Dili earlier this week. Carrascalão said there existed two main candidates for the post, Armindo Soares Mariano, president of the Legislative Assembly of East Timor and Florintino Sarmento, president of East Timor's branch of the Indonesian Human Rights Commission. Carrascalão said he expected Mariano become East Timor's next governor because ''the population does not accept'' Sarmento. Osorio Soares has threatened to fire all East Timorese civil servants failing endorse, in writing, Indonesia's autonomy proposal for the occupied territory.-Lusa nnnn Copyright© 1996 Agência Lusa E-Mail Agência Lusa Back to October Menu |
