Timor/Macau: UN envoy meets jailed East Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmao
Macau, Oct. 23 (Lusa) - United Nations envoy Tamrat Samuel met jailed East Timorese
armed resistance leader Xanana Gusmão in Jakarta earlier this week. Samuel told LUSA in
Macau by telephone from Dili on Thursday he had a ''very good meeting'' with Gusmão at
the Cipinang prison on the outskirts of Indonesian capital on Monday. The UN official, who
is an Asia-Pacific affairs assistant to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, held talks with
representatives of the National Timorese Resistance Council in Dili, capital of the
occupied territory of East Timor, on Thursday.
Samuel, who declined to reveal details of his talks with Gusmão, described the outcome
of the meeting as ''very positive.'' The envoy merely acknowledged that both had exchanged
views on talks between Portugal and Indonesia on autonomy proposals for East Timor in New
York some two weeks ago. Samuel met earlier this week Roman Catholic Bishop Dom Ximenes
Belo and pro-Indonesian Governor Abilio Osorio Soares in Dili, apart from meetings with
other pro-Indonesian representatives.-Lusa nnnn
