Timor/Australia: Governor threatens to suspend scholarships
Sydney, Oct. 27 (Lusa) - East Timor Abilio Osorio Soares has threated to suspend the
scholarships of East Timorese student in Indonesia if they decided to support a referendum
independence in the occupied territory, the East Timor International Support Centre said
in Sydney on Monday. According to the centre, representatives of the governor told East
Timorese students in Java earlier this month they would automatically lose their
scholarships if they failed to declare their support, in writing, of Jakarta's autonomy
proposal for East Timor.
A communique issued by the centre described the controversial pro-Indonesian governor
as a "threat to security" in East Timor.
