Timor/Macau: Co-ordinator of National Timorese Resistance Council attacked in Dili
Macau, Oct. 13 (Lusa) - The co-ordinator of the National Timorese Resistance Council,
Leandro Isaac, was attacked by persons unknown during a street rally by tens of thousands
in Dili on Monday.
A source of the National Timorese Resistance Council (CNRT) told LUSA in Macau by
telephone from Dili that Isaac had sustained minor head injuries in the attack.
Isaac has been co-ordinator of the CNRT since last Thursday. He organised three days of
demonstrations against pro-Indonesian governor Abilio Osorio Soares, which ended on
Monday. The demonstrations were directed against the governor's decision last week to seek
the resignation of all civil servants failing to support Jakarta's limited autonomy
proposal for the occupied territory.
The protesters have demanded Soares immediate resignation, accusing him of corruption
and nepotism. The protests between last Saturday and Monday were also meant to show public
anger at large-scale Indonesian military offensive against pro-independence FALINTIL
freedom fighters. FALINTIL is the armed wing of the East Timorese resistance to the
Indonesian occupation forces.-Lusa nnnn
