30 SET 98 - 11:32 East Timor: Several hundred stage protest outside prison in Baucau in demand release of political prisoners
Baucau, Sept. 30 (Lusa) - Several Hundred East Timorese staged a protest outside a prison in Baucau on Wednesday, demanding that the Indonesian regime release all East Timorese political prisoners, including armed resistance leader Xanana Gusmão.
Baucau lies some 100 kilometres east of the occupied territory's capital Dili.
A police spokesman said the peaceful protest had lasted for about an hour.
Guerrrilla leader Gusmão was arrested by the Indonesian authorities in 1992. He is serving a 20-year term in the Cipinang prison in the outskirts of Jakarta.
While President B.J. Habibie has released several dozen East Timorese prisoners since he replaced Suharto in May, at least 89 political prisoners are still imprisoned in the occupied territory of East Timor. Several other East Timorese political prisoners are said to have been jailed in different provinces in Indonesia. Jakarta occupied East Timor in December 1975.
