Timor/UN: Life expectancy in East Timor less than 50 years
New, York UN, 02 Sep (Lusa) - East Timor's life expentancy is less than 50 years,
according to a UN report released in New York on Wednesday. The life expectancy for men in
East Timor amount to just 46.6 years, while women in the territory occupied by Indonesia
can expect to live average of 48.4 years. The life expentacy in Indonesia amounts to 63.3
years for men and 67 year for women.
According to UN population report, East Timor has one of the lowest expectacy rates of
the world's less populated countries and territories. East Timor, a half-island off
northern Australia which has been under military occupation of Indonesia since December
1975, has about 857,000 inhabitants, among them thousands of migrants from Indonesia. East
Timor also one of the highest infant morality rates in the world , amounting to 235 per
1,000 newborns. The UN report also points out that just 7.5 per cent of East Timor
populations lives in urban areas.
