Timor/Portugal: Structure of National Timorese Resistance Council made public
Lisbon, Sept. 11 (Lusa) - The names of the members of the National Timorese Resistance
Council have been released in Dili without any reprisal by the Indonesian authorities in
the occupied territory. The names were made public during a special swearing-in ceremony
at the Caritas headquarters in Dili, capital of East Timor, on Wednesday. It was the first
time since the Indonesian occupation of East Timor began 23 years ago that the resistance
movement had been able to hold a public swearing-in ceremony in the territory.
All the names of the members of the National Political Committee of the National
Resistance Council were announced, with the exception of its vice-president. Sources said
this could indicate that the vice-president was an East Timorese holding an official
Indonesian position. 14 of the members live in East Timor or Indonesia. The other leading
members of the National Timorese Resistance Council were sworn in at a special ceremony in
Lisbon on 28 April.
A message of jailed armed resistance leader Xanana Gusmao sent to the ceremony in Dili
earlier this week stressed that the resistance council's main objective was to acheive
''political reconciliation'' among the various East Timorese political forces. The
following name were released in Dili this week: Abel da Costa Belo, David Dias Ximenes,
Manuel Carrascalao, Domingos de Sousa, Francisco Lopes de Caravalho, Joao Alves, Leandro
Issac, Leao dos Reis Amaral, Taur Natam Ruak (vice-commander of the armed wing of the
resistance, FALINTIL) and Lucas da Costa. The members comprise different parties - among
them UDT, FRETILIN and Worker's Party - and independent voices.-Lusa nnnn
