Bishop Dom Ximenes Belo calls for setting-up United Front
Jakarta, Sept. 14 (Lusa) - East Timor's Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate, Roman-Catholic
Bishop Dom Ximenes Belo, has called for the setting-up of a "united front"
representing all the people of the occupied territory. The bishop reportedly made the
appeal during a closed-door meeting with some 50 East Timorese representatives last week,
according to Agence France Press. However, the armed wing of the East Timorese resistance,
FALINTIL, was not represented at the meeting. FALINTIL has waged a guerrilla war on the
Indonesian occupation forces since 1975.
The governor of East Timor appointed by Jakarta, Abilio Osorio, also failed to take
part in the meeting called by the highly respected bishop, who is the apostolic
administrator of the diocese of Dili, capital of East Timor.
