East Timor: Death of Peacekeeper is Challenge to UN and Wahid - Matan
Ruak 27 Jul-18:48
The Monday killing of a UN peacekeeper in East Timor is a
"challenge" to both the United Nations and Indonesian President
Abdurrahman Wahid, the Falintil chief of staff said Thursday in Lisbon.
Taur Matan Ruak spoke to media after a meeting with Portuguese
President Jorge Sampaio, with whom he discussed the current situation in
East Timor. Falintil is the armed wing of the National Council of Timorese
Resistance (CNRT), the territory's umbrella leadership group, whose
president is Xanana Gusmao.
Matan Ruak expressed his hope that in the wake of the New Zealand
peacekeeper's death, the UN would take more effective action against
pro-Indonesia militias. He also praised the Jakarta government's decision
to investigate the Monday incident, which took place near East Timor's
border with Indonesian West Timor.
