Independence leader Xanana Gusmao will begin a visit to East Timor's Oe
Cusse enclave and western areas of the territory bordering Indonesia
Tuesday, on a mission to "raise democratic consciousness,"
officials announced in Dili.
With a calendar for full independence looming, Gusmao, recently tapped
as president of the National Council, or transitional legislature, has
been personally mandated to help prepare the population for the new
political process.
Beyond Oe Cusse, Gusmao was to visit the areas of Letefoho, Bobonaro,
Maliana and Suai.
The East Timorese leadership has said it hopes to see an independence
timetable set next month at an international donors conference in
Brussels.
