Government supports emergence of independent and stable East Timor
Bernama
Kuala Lumpur, 29th November: Malaysia will continue to give priority to
the emergence of a free, stable, and safe East Timor which will have good
relations with Indonesia and other neighbours.
Malaysian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Datuk Hasmy
Agam said the peace and stability of East Timor will depend on complete
peace not only among the East Timor people but also between East Timor and
Indonesia.
According to him, the issue of justice must be properly handled within
the context of achieving peace in East Timor because there will be no
genuine and eternal peace without justice.
"Probably, this issue will be fully handled by the leadership of
an independent East Timor, but UNTAET (United Nations Transitional
Administration in East Timor) can play an important role in making steps
to ensure the success of this process," he told an open session of
the UN Security Council on the situation in East Timor.
The text of his speech was faxed to Bernama here.
Hasmy said UNTAET has started an important step in facilitating peace
talks and strengthening Eats Timor's ability to achieve justice. "The
international community and the Security Council must continue to support
these efforts and other efforts made by UNTAET," he said.
He said Malaysia, like other Security Council members, is concerned
over the fate of refugees remaining in camps in West Timor. Hasmy said
Malaysia appreciates efforts to immediately redeploy representatives of
the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] and other relief
agencies in camps in West Timor.
"We welcome the Indonesian government's commitment to cooperating
with the United Nations and other international agencies in allowing the
UNHCR and humanitarian workers to return to West Timor, " he said.
