24 Dec 01 16:49 East Timor: Gusmao Calm at Prospect of Portugal Under
New Management
Xanana Gusmao, widely expected to be East Timor`s first president next
year following the territory`s independence, said Sunday that a change of
governing party in Portugal would not concern him.
The ex-resistance leader told Lusa that Timor "was always a
consensual question in Portugal" and a possible change in governing
party after early elections next year was not worrying.
Gusmao, who arrived in Portugal Dec. 7 on a private visit, met Sunday
with the leader of the Nationalist Party of Timor (PNT) Abilio Araujo.
Araujo told Lusa that his party had not yet decided which presidential
candidate to support, but he wished to demonstrate "personally"
his support of Gusmao.
