15 MAR 99 - 09:16 East Timor: Portugal pays pensions of some 730 retired civil servants

Dili, Mar 15 (Lusa) - The Portuguese government pays the pensions of about 730 retired civil servants of its former colonial administration in East Timor, the branch manager of an Indonesian bank told Lusa in Dili last week. Karbani S. Agung, manager of the branch of Bank Dagang Negara in Dili, said the pensions totalled about US $ 300,000 a month, depending on the prevailing exchange rates. The remittances reach Dili through a North American bank because of the absence of direct financial transfers between Indonesia and Portugal. The branch manager said the remittances had begun in the early 90s.-Lusa nnnn
