Statement by Bishop of Leeds

The following statement was made today 7th September 1999 by the Rt.Rev.David Konstant, Bishop of Leeds, Chairman of the Catholic Bishop's Department of International Affairs (Bishops Conference of England and Wales).

"The situation in East Timor is an injustice that cries out for action by the international community. We cannot stand by and allow this violence to continue. We urge the British Government, the United Nations, the European Union and all members of the international community, to bring all possible pressure to bear on the Indonesian Government. There must be an immediate halt to all economic and military aid to Indonesia. An international armed peace-keeping force must be sent in as soon as possible.

The Indonesian government must be made aware that the international community will not tolerate savagery of the kind seen in East Timor since the consultation, and that the East Timorese people will not be abandoned.

We appeal for prayers throughout England and Wales for justice and peace in East Timor".
