for US pressure
Radio Renascenca, 8 December 98
Xanana Gusmao has sent a message to the US government. He calls on Washington to press
Jakarta to comply with the commitments undertaken. Xanana stresses one of these
commitments: the effective reduction in the Indonesian military presence in Timor. The
message has not yet arrived in the USA. It is being taken by Fernando Araujo,
secretary-general of the Timorese Students' National Resistance.
[Araujo] The message is for the American government. Xanana wants to appeal to the USA,
that it is time to exert pressure on Indonesia to respect the resolutions regarding East
Timor, which Indonesia has violated.
