Lisbon Lawmaker to Seek Suharto's Extradition on Murder Charges
Lisbon, Dec. 11 (Lusa) - Portuguese legislator Nuno Correia da Silva announced Thursday
he was pressing forward with plans to seek an international arrest warrant against former
Indonesian leader Suharto on charges of murders in East Timor. "My intention is the
trial of 200 crimes of homicide prepetrated against (East) Timorese, not a trial of
Suharto's political regime," the rightist Popular Party lawmaker said. "Portugal
is the administrative power in East Timor and as such has administrative responsibilities
for justice in the territory," he added. The United Nations has never recognized
Jakarta's sovereignty over the Portuguese territory, which Indonesia invaded in 1975.
Correia da Silva's announcement followed his meeting with the Justice Minister to inform
the government of his intentions. Last month, Portugal's chief prosecutor determined that
national legislation would not permit the extradition request.
