26 NOV 98 - 07:53 East Timor/UN: UN officials to visit occupied territory, including Alas
Washington, Nov 25 (Lusa) - The United Nations special envoy for East Timor, Jamsheed Marker, will visit the occupied territory next month, a UN spokesman said in New York on Wednesday. Fred Eckhard said that before Marker's visit several other UN officials would visit East Timor. Eckhard also said UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomed the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission's decision to investigate the recent incidents in the East Timorese village of Alas. Scores of East Timorese civilians were reportedly massacred by Indonesian troops in Alas earlier this month. Meanwhile, diplomatic sources said in Washington on Wednesday that UN diplomat Tamrat Samuel would visit East Timor next week. The sources said the diplomat, who was scheduled to arrive in Dili on Monday, was planned to visit Alas during his tour of East Timor. UN special envoy for East Timor, Jamsheed Marker, is scheduled to arrive in East Timor on December 17, according to UN sources.
