03 FEV 99 - 12:40 East Timor: Indonesia 'Obligated' to Aid Smooth Transition, Resistance Spokesman Says

Braga, Portugal, Feb. 3 (Lusa) - The Portugal-based representative of the National Council of Timorese Resistance (CNRT) said Wednesday that Indonesia should not abandon East Timor abruptly and downplayed the possibility of civil war. Speaking to a national gathering of Portuguese teachers, Roque Rodrigues said Jakarta had the "obligation of remaining in Timor, participating in its co-management, until its total independence." He set aside scenarios of civil war between pro- and anti-independence groups, claiming that "90 percent of the Timorese favor independence." "Indonesia must learn with us how to sow the future, because the Indonesians are our neighbors and neighbors must live together," he added.
