Bush on his election as president of the United States, expressing hopes for the broadening of "the excellent relationship" with Washington. "We hope that the excellent relationship between East Timor and the Clinton administration will expand and will grow and develop during the Bush presidency", Gusmao said in a telegram sent to Bush from Dili at the weekend. The message also thanked Washington for its "decisive aid" since the territory voted for independence from Indonesia in a plebiscite last year.
