ETAN joins 240 organizations in demanding an independent, thorough investigation of Golfrid Siregar’s death

Golfrid Siregar

October 31, 2019 -
We are standing in solidarity with Indonesian groups calling on the Indonesian government to enact stronger protections to human rights defenders. Today, we delivered an international solidarity letter with over 200 organizational sign-ons to draw attention to the growing threats facing human rights activists. The letter was delivered today to the Embassy of Indonesia in Washington, DC.

Golfrid Siregar of WALHI/Friends of the Earth Indonesia was deeply involved in fights to protect Sumatra’s rainforests and defend communities threatened by palm oil plantations and large hydropower projects. While local authorities appear to be trying to treat his death as the result of a traffic accident, a substantial amount of evidence points to potential foul play.

He was found beaten and abandoned on the side of the road in the middle of the night on October 3. A longtime environmental human rights defender, Golfrid died under extremely suspicious circumstances. Although local police have ruled his death a traffic accident, he suffered serious head injuries as if from a hard, direct blow, even though his clothes and motorcycle was found relatively undamaged and not reflective of being in a crash. He was found with dirt on his clothes, even though the area where he was found was paved. There were also no bloodstains in the area. We are standing in solidarity with Indonesian groups who are calling for a full, transparent investigation into his death.

Indonesia has a long and sordid history of criminalizing and intimidating human rights and environmental defenders, including a legacy of torture and, in some cases, murder. In recent months there has been a dramatic rise in the attacks against human rights defenders in Indonesia. WALHI has called for a thorough and transparent police investigation on par with international standards, and an independent fact-finding mission by Indonesia’s National Commission on Human Rights (known as Komnas HAM).
